The Influence of the Physical Attractiveness of Job Applicants on Success in the Selection Process

5 Abstract The subject of interest of the present thesis is the discrimination of physically less attractive job applicants in the selection process in organizations. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the potential impact of physical attractiveness of female job applicants on their success in the selection process in organisations. The thesis includes a total of four theoretical chapters that deal with job analysis and description and employee qualification profiles; analysis of job applicant files as a method of employee selection; physical attractiveness and common characteristics of physically attractive individuals; and discrimination against physically less attractive job applicants. The thesis also includes a quantitative empirical research to examine the effect of physical attractiveness of job applicants on the likelihood of being invited for a selection interview. A total of 39 participants, both male and female employees, who have experience of recruitment in organisations, took part in the empirical research. The task of the participants was to select fictitious structured CVs including attached photographs of the job applicants in relation to the job being offered.
